It may sound surprising, but Roy Keane has good reasons why he doesn’t want Manchester United to keep their veteran striker, Edinson Cavani, for a further season.

Roy Keane admits he hopes Manchester United will not keep Edinson Cavani for the next season as they will need a new, younger striker to compete for the Premier League title.

The former Paris Saint-Germain forward has been in stellar form recently, scoring five goals and two assists in his last five appearances in all competitions, including two goals and two assists in a remarkable 6-2 win over AS Roma in the Europa League.

The arrival of Edinson Cavani, who has scored 12 goals so far for Manchester United, is certainly a big upgrade for the club’s need for the need for a clinical center-forward that Anthony Martial has so far failed to play.

The club board, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and perhaps the fans alike hope that they can keep the 34-year-old striker whose contract expires at the end of the season, but Roy Keane hopes that will not happen.

The reason is very plausible. If Manchester United manages to keep old Edinson Cavani who can’t play regularly every week, then they will feel so complacent that they will not bring in new, younger strikers like Harry Kane or Erling Haaland.

The former Red Devils captain who helped the club win seven Premier League titles told Sky Sports, “I hope they don’t keep it, because they will look and think ‘we don’t need to find a new striker’.”

“He’s 34 years old, if you depend on Cavani next year to get United back to winning league titles, it’s better to forget about that title. “He’s going to be a reserve striker and he doesn’t want to be a reserve striker, so that’s why he’s reluctant to sign a new contract and there’s obviously a family reason behind his decision too.”

Cancel Leaving, Edinson Cavani Will Stay At Manchester United Another Season

Previously, Manchester United had good news after their sensational 6-2 Europa League semi-final victory over Roma last Friday with Edinson Cavani’s future now starting to find the bright spot to hope for.

Edinson Cavani has decided not to leave Manchester United this summer and will instead stay at Old Trafford next season and take the option of extending his contract for an additional 12 months, according to reports.

The Uruguay international forward appears set to end his time in European football and return to South America to play in Argentina, with Boca Juniors reportedly interested in signing him.

But despite his doubts, he has now been persuaded to stay and will stay for at least one more season, according to ESPN, with him previously only on a year-long contract plus the option of an additional 12 months after joining on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain.

Edinson Cavani has scored 12 goals in 33 appearances this season, with 16 of them coming from the bench. His immense experience that has brought him to become PSG’s all-time top scorer with 200 goals means that the 34-year-old striker is still expected to stay at Old Trafford.

The official announcement is expected to be made next week and will give manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a big boost to prepare the team for next season, as the Norwegian boss has always hoped to keep the Uruguayan bomber.

“He knows how I feel, he knows that I would love to have him for another year, we have talked about it. I understand this year is very difficult, but I promise him that Old Trafford and Manchester are different places from the fans at the stadium, “said Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after his team’s 6-2 win over Roma in the first leg of the Europa League semi-final on Friday some time ago.

The retirement of Edinson Cavani is likely to greatly affect Manchester United’s transfer policy in the summer, but previously they also had several problems to resolve, including the future of Paul Pogba whose contract only has 12 months left.
