The Argentine superstar, who took the armband from Andres Iniesta in 2018, is clearly delighted to lead his club to Copa del Rey glory at Sevilla, telling Barca TV, “It is very special to be captain of this club.”
“This is a very special Copa for me because I was able to lift it myself. Not being able to celebrate with our fans is a shame. This is the situation we have to live with. This is embarrassing. The Copa is always special and the fans really enjoy it. These are two clubs who are used to finals like this and we enjoy it. ”
Lionel Messi Is Sure To Survive After Barcelona Win The Copa Del Rey
Lionel Messi is increasingly believed to be extending his contract at Barcelona, after the Catalan team won the Copa del Rey.
Messi has not confirmed whether he will stay at Camp Nou after the summer. But his success in lifting the seventh Copa del Rey trophy with Barca opened up the opportunity.
Barca president Joan Laporta admitted he “believes” Messi wants to stay at his club after he scored the two goals that helped Barcelona beat Athletic Bilbao, 4-0, in the Copa del Rey final on Sunday 18 April 2021.
“Lionel Messi is the best player in the world, he’s a player with deep roots in this club, who also really loves Barca,” said Joan Laporta after the final which was held in Seville.
“I am sure he wants to stay and we already know that we will do all in our power, among the club’s possibilities, to make sure he continues his career with us. That’s what we want the most, ”added Laporta, as reported by the First Post.
Messi scored a spectacular goal at La Cartuja, before he finished with his 31st goal of the season.
Through these two goals, Lionel Messi has also recorded 13 consecutive seasons scoring more than 30 goals for Barcelona. “Leo showed his skill today,” said Laporta.
Even though the day before, Laporta also expressed doubts, whether the 33-year-old player will continue his career at Barca or move to another club.
Messi’s future continues to be questioned when his contract will end at the end of this season. However, Laporta, who has just been re-elected, is optimistic about the prospect of capturing his team at Camp Nou.
La Pulga’s current contract has only about two months left, before he becomes a free transfer player. During the last few months, Lionel Messi has continued to be linked with the transfer plans of a number of top clubs, in which PSG and Manchester City are the two foremost teams that are reportedly able to bring Messi from Camp Nou.
Moreover, until now Lionel Messi has not agreed on a new contract at Barca and prefers to wait until this season ends, to consider the offers and projects offered by Laporta.
